The numbers are displayed brightly and the battery life is impressive. The first one we bought was left outside in -27 degree temperature. Out of curiosity we pressed the scan button and it displayed the number as if it had never been left outside. A unique feature is that when plugged in to a computer the scanner will send the number to wherever your curser is - which means you could update a record in your herd management software. The only thing this doesn't do is store numbers. So you can't scan multiple animals and then download any data. But for small herds where you just want to verify the number it's great!
